Meet Laurie
WHO
I have been a practicing Physical Therapist for 33 years working with general orthopedic and spine patients using an integrated manual therapy approach. Over the past fifteen years I have focused on Pelvic Health, Women’s Health, Oncology. I completed my 200 HR RYT certification in 2019, and my PYT (Professional Yoga Therapist Certification) in 2023.
Since 2022, I have been teaching a Medical Therapeutic Yoga Class privately to my students, and am now excited to be able to offer a version of this as part of the schedule at Grounded Yoga and Movement.
WHAT
The goal of my class will be to integrate the evidence based practices of physical therapy and functional movement with the breath and mindful movement practice of yoga to improve my students’ quality of life.
Classes are designed to foster joint preservation and sustainable fitness, and to aid in preventing chronic disease, pain, and injury as we progress through life.
Class will be effective for those who are experiencing pelvic, neuromuscular, and orthopedic (joint and back) pain. It is also a wonderful place to start for those new to yoga looking to enter safely into a new yoga practice. I hope to help each students learn to fit the asana, or pose to their body instead of trying to fit their body to the pose.
WHY
I was introduced to my yoga practice just 9 years ago and recognized right away the value it would bring to my physical therapy practice as a tool for my patients in their healing journey. In my personal life yoga has been not only a source of physical strengthening, but an education in navigating life. I find a sense of peace and well being through my yoga practice.
I believe strongly that the practice of yoga can meet each individual where they are and when applied in a thoughtful way can assist them in finding a way back to health and pain-free movement.
Our body is an integration of systems designed to function and move with ease and grace. While these systems function optimally, we move without effort. It is my goal in my physical therapy practice and in my class to help these systems return to balance, allowing the body to again move and flow without pain or restriction.
